Christ at the Centre: Why Everything Begins and Ends With Jesus

The hub of a wooden wheel with every spoke running to it
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together… that in everything he might be preeminent. — Colossians 1:17–18

It is fashionable to say a church is Christ-centred; it is rarer to mean it. To mean it is to say that Christ is not the most important topic among many, but the one in whom every other topic finds its meaning. Marriage, money, work, suffering, mission, prayer — none of them is understood until it is understood in Him.

The centre of creation

Paul’s hymn in Colossians 1 says all things were created through Christ and for Him. The universe is not a neutral stage on which the Gospel later happened. It was made by Christ, for Christ, and it holds together — physically, morally, historically — in Him. Take Him out and nothing coheres, which is why lives, families and nations that leave Him at the edge tend to fall apart at the middle.

The centre of Scripture

Jesus told the Pharisees the Scriptures bear witness about Him (John 5:39), and told the disciples on the Emmaus road the same, "beginning with Moses and all the Prophets" (Luke 24:27). A Word-abiding church reads the whole Bible as one story with one hero. Genesis is about Him. The Psalms sing of Him. The law drove us to Him. The prophets longed for Him. Every promise finds its Yes in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20).

The centre of your life

This is why every article in this series has come back to the same place. It is not a lack of range. It is the range. Everything begins and ends with Jesus, and a church that knows it will never run out of things to say.
