Christ Is Not Part of Your Life — Christ Is Your Life

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." — John 14:6

Listen to how believers talk and you will hear the architecture of their faith. "I try to put God first." "I make room for Christ." "Faith is an important part of my life." All sincere, and all built on the same assumption: that life is mine, and Christ is a portion of it — the largest portion, perhaps, but a portion.

Jesus never spoke that way about Himself, and Paul never spoke that way about Him. "I am the life." "Christ who is your life." Not a slice of the loaf. The loaf.

The problem with portions

If Christ is a part of your life, then the other parts have their own source. Work runs on ambition, marriage on affection, money on anxiety, and Christ is consulted when those run dry. That is not union; it is a timetable. It leaves the believer exhausted, because most of his life is still self-sourced, and it leaves Christ honoured but unused.

What it means that He is the life

A small correction with large consequences

Try, for a week, refusing the language of portions. Not "I need to give God more time," but "Christ is my life — what does His life look like in this hour?" You will find prayer, work, rest and relationships stop competing for a slot and begin to belong to one Person. That is not a technique. It is simply agreeing with what is already true.
