From the Sanctuary to the Marketplace: Christ in You at Work

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. — Colossians 3:23–24

If Christ lives in you, He does not stay behind in the hall when you leave on Sunday. He goes with you into the shop on Monday, the office, the classroom, the farm, the kitchen and the boardroom. The new creation does not have a sacred half and a secular half. It has one life, and Christ is that life everywhere it goes.

Whatever you do

Paul wrote Colossians 3:17 and 3:23 to household servants — people whose work was unglamorous, unpaid and unseen. He told them their work was for the Lord Christ and that He would reward it. If that was true of a first-century servant sweeping a floor, it is true of a trader in Eket market, a nurse on night duty, a civil servant, a software developer and a mother at home.

"Whatever you do" leaves nothing out. Every honest task can be done in the name of the Lord Jesus — that is, as His representative, drawing on His life, for His honour.

What Christ in you changes at work

Family and the everyday

The same chapter that speaks of work speaks of husbands, wives, children and parents. Christ in you shows up at the dinner table as patience, in marriage as tenderness, in parenting as steadiness. The home is not a lesser sphere than the church; it is often where the new creation is tested most and seen most clearly.

Why WordHouse trains for the marketplace

This is why our training tracks do not stop at doctrine. Christian Leadership & Excellence exists because we believe believers are leaders wherever they stand, and the marketplace is a mission field. We are not sending you out to survive the week until Sunday. We are sending Christ in you into every sphere of human endeavour, to reveal Him there.
