The Holy Spirit and the Reality of Christ Within
Rev. Aniekan "Mbomboyo" Okokon ·
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. — John 16:14
Some Christians speak of the Spirit as if He were a separate department — Christ for salvation, the Spirit for power and experience. But Jesus described the Spirit’s work in one sentence: He will glorify Me. The Spirit’s whole ministry in the believer is to make Christ known, Christ felt, Christ formed. He is called the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9) for a reason.
How Christ comes to live in you
Romans 8:9–11 moves between "the Spirit of God dwells in you", "Christ is in you" and "the Spirit of him who raised Jesus" without a seam. This is how Christ in you is a reality and not a metaphor: by the Spirit. The risen Lord is at the Father’s right hand, and He is in you, and both are true because the Spirit who is His Spirit has taken up residence.
What the Spirit does with Christ in you
- He teaches — opening the Scriptures so that you meet Christ in them (John 14:26).
- He assures — bearing witness with your spirit that you are a child of God (Romans 8:16).
- He transforms — beholding Christ, you are changed "from one degree of glory to another… this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
- He empowers — the same power that raised Jesus gives life to your mortal body (Romans 8:11), for holiness and for service.
- He prays — interceding through you when you do not know what to ask (Romans 8:26).
Walking by the Spirit
To walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16) is not to chase sensations. It is to live moment by moment in dependence on the One who makes Christ real in you — to listen, to yield, to obey the promptings that always agree with Scripture and always look like Jesus. Where the Spirit is at work, Christ is seen. That is the test, and the promise.
