Your Life Is Hidden With Christ
Rev. Aniekan "Mbomboyo" Okokon ·
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. — Colossians 3:3
Hidden is a strange word to use about a life. We want our lives seen — our work noticed, our faithfulness recognised, our worth confirmed. Paul says the believer’s life is hidden, and he says it as good news.
Hidden means kept
When something precious is hidden, it is out of reach of thieves. Your life is not lying on the table where circumstances, critics and your own failures can get at it. It is with Christ, in God — behind two locks, held by the One who cannot lose anything the Father gives Him (John 10:28–29). Whatever happens this week, the essential you is not at risk.
Hidden means not yet fully seen
The verse that follows explains: "When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." The world does not see who you are yet. Sometimes you do not see it either. Your bank balance, your health and your reputation are not accurate reports of your life, because your life is not located in them. It is located in Christ, and it will be revealed when He is.
What hidden people can do
- They can serve without applause, because their life is not fed by it.
- They can be misunderstood without being undone, because the verdict that matters is already in.
- They can give away money, time and credit, because they are not spending their life — it is hidden and safe.
- They can set their minds on things above (3:2), because that is where their life is kept.
A person whose life is hidden with Christ is the freest person in any room. He has nothing to protect and nothing to prove, and so he can love. Set your mind there today, where your life actually is.
